The complexity of dragonflies moves me. If not solely for their breathtaking beauty, for what makes them unique beyond aesthetics. Dragonflies are ancient beings with their 300 million years in existence, there are about 6000 known species with astonishing variety, their unique ability to control each of four wings independently gives them unmatched freedom of movement and speed, they are formidable, acrobatic predators and they have a very curious evolution from egg to adult, starting their lives underwater. All that barely scratches the surface. I have always been enchanted by them; so much so that when I see one I feel the urge to capture it, however, the respect I have for these alien-looking fairies prevents me from doing so; oh, the joy of a dragonfly landing on you! I cannot pretend more than that. I just could never own one… or could I?

That’s what motivated me to make dragonflies the protagonists of my new artwork. In Flying Jewel I used procedural movement and animation to instill life in a digital, dreamy depiction of them inhabiting diverse scenarios, some darker, some colorful, some even provocative, with different species flying around, each with unique vibrant and iridescent colours.

The artwork also uses sensors to react to viewer’s presence, which adds life to the enframed companion.

Flying Jewel is an ideal piece for private or public spaces that need a touch art and modernity, to engage audiences and recall the immediate, yet intricate, aesthetics of nature.
