In the intent to build a theoretical model that explained the shapes and the growth of plants, Aristid Lindenmayer came up with his famous L-Systems. At that time he probably had just a vague intuition of how many applications his theories could be applied to. A lot of interesting work has been done in science, art and music using L-Systems.
I have always been fascinated about how nature creates shapes (morphogenesis) and, despite L-Systems are a synthesis, they can generate believable structures. Furthermore, L-Systems are flexible enough to be used to build structures that have little to do with nature and the step to some minimal, beautiful abstract art isn’t too long.
In reviewing these theories I used P5.js to put together some code which resulted in a rather pleasing small collection of drawings.
